Four Future Hawks Making Impact on Western Bantam B Team
The Western Bantam B team has found more consistency of late which has led to 3 wins in the past 6 games. A large part of the success for the Colonials can be attributed to the play of 4 players that will be wearing the blue and gold for Newtown in the next 2 years. Future Nighthawks Forrest Anderson (11-7-18), Adam Gray (8-8-16), Will Pelisson (4-9-13) and recent addition to the team Jetson Ku (4-3-7 in 7 games played) have all been major contributers. Anderson has tallied a goal in 6 of the last 7 games including a late third period game winning goal in a 5-4 win over the Southern Stars on 1/3. Gray has accumulated 5 goals and 6 assists for 11 points in the last 7 games including 2 goals and the game winner vs Southeastern on 1/10. Pelisson has been finding many ways to contribute for the colonials by taking many key faceoffs and playing strong defensive hockey. Pelisson recorded a team high 3 assists in the win over Southeastern on 1/10. Ku meanwhile has been a steady contributer with 7 points in 7 games since joining the Colonials. Ku has been a welcomed addition to the offense and has fit in well with the team. The Colonials are back in action this saturday 1/17 at 11:15 vs Simsbury and they take on fellow future hawk Justin Halmose on Sunday who tends goal for the CT Riverhawks. The Bantam B team will play their state tournament in mid February looking to defend their title.

Cox, Hanley and Marsh come up big in wins over East Haven and Yale
The Western Jr. Colonial Bantam A team got two big wins this past weekend to extend their winning streak to 7 games! Future Nighthawks Ethan Cox and Jack Hanley were in the giving mood in Saturday’s 3-1 win over East Haven as they each contributed an assist in the game. The following day the Colonials traveled to Yale and visitors poured it on in an 8-1 win. The Future hawks appeared right at home in Ingalls rink as Cox scored twice, Hanley added a goal and two assists and Devan Marsh also picked up an assist in the win. Next season all three will be joining the Nighthawks and are expected to make an immediate impact for a team that is graduating 6 top forwards this year. With their impressive performance at Ingalls rink, the site of the state semifinals and finals for high school, Hawks fans are hopeful that Cox, Hanley and Marsh will have what it takes to bring Newtown to Yale in their 4 years in the Blue and Gold. The Colonials are now 15-5-2 in CHC league play and carry their 7 game winning streak into their matchup next Saturday with the White Plainsmen. The Colonials have 6 games remaining in their regular season and they should challenge for a state title this postseason.

Carlson and Hawke Combine for 3 goals in rout of Yale!
Third time was the charm for the Western Jr. Colonials Bantam B team this past weekend. Despite outshooting the Whalers 47-20 on Saturday the Colonials were unable to overcome an early 2-0 deficit and fell 3-2. The Colonials fell behind 2-0 in the first 2 minutes of the game forcing Coach Grose to spend his timeout to settle the team down. The Colonials responded with a power play goal from Newtowner Jiyie Hawke on a deflection of a James McCarthy blast from the point. The Colonials then knotted the game at 2 with another power play goal in the second period; however a late third period goal by the Whalers was enough to seal the deal. The Colonials were back on the ice only hours later as they played the Wallingford Hawks in a night game. Despite falling in a 2-0 hole for the second time in the day, the colonials rallied for a 2-2 tie.
After a long day of hockey on Saturday, the Colonials returned to the ice on Sunday in need of a win against Yale. The Colonials were determined to not fall into a first period deficit as they had twice the previous day. The Colonials did so in style scoring only 16 seconds into the game and did not let up. For a team that has struggled to score, the floodgates finally opened scoring 4 more goals in the opening frame. Two of the goals in the first period came on the power play bringing the weekend total to 5 power play goals. Future Nighthawk Jiyie Hawke tallied an assist in the first period and added two goals in the second. Fellow Newtowner Marc Carlson added a breakaway goal in the third period to finish the scoring in a 9-0 rout.
The Colonials have 4 games remaining in the regular season before the state tournament. The Colonials seem to be finally hitting their stride and finding the back of the net as they head into the post season.
Future Hawk Jiyie Hawke Tallies a Goal and Assist in Sundays Loss
Jiyie Hawke and the Western Jr Colonial Bantam B team traveled to the Wonderland of Ice in Bridgeport on Sunday January 19th, 2014 to take on the Wonderland Wizards. The Colonials were looking to avenge a November 3-1 loss to the Wizards. The Colonials got off to a strong start and were able to capitalize on an early 2 on 1 with Teddy Berner finishing off a rebound on a shot from Newtown's Jiyie Hawke just 3:15 into the opening frame. After falling behind 3-1 after 2 periods for the second consecutive day, the Colonials again mounted a comeback. Hawke was again on the offensive and he was able to fire a shot home off a pass from James McCarthyt just 1:14 into the third period. McCarthy completed the comeback just two minutes later with a blast from the slot on the power play.
A third period rally the previous day against the ECHO Stars fell short in a 4-3 loss and the Colonials were looking to avoid a repeat. Despite outplaying and outshooting the Wizards for good portions of the final period, the Wizards were able to break the 3-3 tie with a goal that deflected off of two Colonials and past the Colonial netminder with only a few minutes to play. The Colonials were able to pull the goalie for an extra skater and had several opportunities to tie the game in the final minute but were unable to complete the comeback.
Hawke now has 7 goals and 5 assists on the season good for 2nd on the team in assists and 6th in points. Fellow Newtowner Marc Carlson was a midseason addition to the team and has tallied 1 goal along with 2 helpers so far this season. Carlson had a strong game against the Wizards making several smart plays defensively and delivering several checks. The goal and assist for Hawke on Sunday were good for his 4th multi point game of the season.
Hawke and Carlson are both at Newtown Middle School and will be attending Newtown High School starting in the fall of 2014!

Jr Colonials Skate To Another Pee Wee A Win
1/15/2009
The Western CT Jr Colonials Pee Wee A hockey team continued its winning ways with a 5-1 triumph against the Greater New Haven Warriors on January 10 at the Danbury Ice Arena.
With an astounding 47-11 shots on goal advantage for the Jr Colonials, only the outstanding play of the opposing goaltender kept the score from being even more lopsided. The first Jr Colonials goal was a result of old-fashioned hard work deep in the Warriors' zone, with forward Liam Smith jamming the puck into the crease from behind the net and forwards Steven Almeida and Matt Hooker both getting off shots before Hooker finally swatted in the loose puck. Newtown defenseman Owen Sandercox then executed what is becoming a signature move for him this season, a beautiful end-to-end rush which he finished off with a wrist shot from between the face-off circles to make the score 2-0 after one period of play.
The Jr Colonials found themselves on the wrong end of three concurrent penalties at the end of the first period and the Warriors took advantage early in period two with a goal on a rebound to cut the Jr Colonials' lead to 2-1. But, Newtown forward Justin Corsello answered for the Jr Colonials when he gathered a pass from Hooker and elevated the puck high into the net for a 3-1 lead. In period three, the Jr Colonials pulled away when Sandercox snuck in from his defensive point position and wristed home a shot following a nice pass by Smith. Frank Haklits closed out the scoring with a shot from in close, assisted by Hooker and Newtown forward Dan Harrison. This was the Jr Colonials' fifth straight Connecticut Hockey Conference victory and it moved them into a three-way tie for second place with the ECHO Stars and the Hamden Dragons.
In a close race, the three teams have identical 14-4-1 records and they sit only one point behind Simsbury and the Wonderland Wizards, who are tied atop the standings. The Jr Colonials will face West Haven on Saturday at the Danbury Ice Arena. Then, in a game with important playoff implications, the Jr Colonials face the Hamden Dragons on Sunday at the Blake Rink in New Haven.
Jr Colonials’ Pee Wee A Hockey Team Wins Shutouts
1/8/2009
The Western Connecticut Jr Colonials Pee Wee A hockey team took over sole possession of third place in the Connecticut Hockey Conference this past weekend with two impressive victories that featured offense, defense and stellar goaltending.
On Saturday, the Jr Colonials faced off against the West Hartford Wolves at the Danbury Ice Arena and dominated from start to finish in a 4-0 win. The Jr Colonials almost tripled the Wolves' shot total by with a 35-12 advantage. Forward Matt Hooker started the onslaught on the first shift of the game with an unassisted goal on a shot from a tight angle and then followed up later in the period with a high slot shot that was assisted by Kevin Keiser and Steven Almeida. The third goal of the game was an all-Newtown affair with forward Cooper McLean skillfully deflecting a point shot from defenseman Owen Sandercox and forward Dan Harrison slamming the rebound home from the top of the crease. After a scoreless second period, forward Frank Haklits passed the puck in front of the net to Harrison, who then skimmed a pass to McLean who promptly deposited the puck into the back of the net to cap the scoring.
On Sunday, the Jr Colonials faced a key challenge against the ECHO Stars at the Bolton Ice Palace. The Stars had handed the Jr Colonials a bitter defeat on December 20 and stood tied with the Jr Colonials for third place in the CHC. The Jr. Colonials played one of their finest games of the year and prevailed 1-0. In the third period, the Jr Colonials killed off a long 5-on-3 ECHO Stars power play and finally broke through with a goal when Newtown forward Heydan Savoia found the puck in the crease off of a wild scramble in front and buried a shot with 3:50 remaining in the game. From there, it became "The Patrick McLoughlin Show" with the Newtown goaltender making two spectacular glove saves, one on a vicious wrist shot through a maze of bodies and another off of a scramble in tight with less than a minute left in the game to seal the victory. McLoughlin deservedly ended the weekend with two shutout victories and now sports a CHC goals-against average of 1.94 for the season. The Jr Colonials' CHC record is now 13-4-1, only one point behind Simsbury and Hamden, who are in a tie for second place. Up next for the Jr. Colonials is a CHC home game against Greater New Haven on Saturday at the Danbury Ice Arena.
The Jr Colonials Mite A hockey team won the Christmas tournament held by the Stamford Youth Hockey Association at the Terry Conners Rink in Stamford.
The Mites handily won all three qualifying games against Greater Bridgeport's B team, the host Stamford Sharks A team and the White Plains Plainsmen, scoring an impressive 23 goals against and not allowing a goal into their own net. In the final on Sunday, the Jr Colonial Mites played Stamford for a second time. The game started tensely, with the teams tied 2-2 in the second period before the Jr Colonials skated away with a 7-2 triumph. Ethan Cox scored the eventual winning goal and fellow Newtowners Devin Marsh and Jack Hanley contributed in the tourney win. Cox received the championship game MVP award.
Pee Wee Jr Colonials Pour It On In Wins
12/30/2008
The Western Connecticut Jr Colonials Pee Wee A hockey team won two home games at Danbury Ice Arena with an offensive explosion, outscoring the opponents a combined 14-3, this past weekend.
On Saturday, the Jr Colonials applied constant pressure throughout all three periods of play to defeat the Northwestern Connecticut IceHawks 7-2. After Kevin Keiser and Liam Smith scored for Western CT, Newtowners Owen Sandercox and Cooper McLean got on the scoreboard. McLean's was a particularly impressive goal as he drove hard to the net, received a perfect lead pass from Smith and directed a shot between the IceHawk goaltender's legs. In the third period, the IceHawks showed some life and scored two goals to narrow the Jr Colonial's lead to 4-2 before another Newtown skater, Dan Harrison, scored on a quick wrist shot, with assists going to Frank Haklits and McLean. Steven Almeida and Haklits then closed out the scoring. The IceHawks record now stands at 16-4, with the Jr Colonials having handed them three of those losses.
On Sunday, the Jr Colonials overwhelmed the Northeastern Connecticut IceDogs from the opening faceoff, scoring four times in the first period en route to a 7-1 triumph. The first goal was scored 53 seconds into the game by Sandercox, assisted by fellow Newtowner Heydan Savoia. It took another seven minutes for Kevin Keiser to light the lamp, followed less than a minute later by a Haklits goal and then another Keiser goal with 3.1 seconds left in the period to make the score 4-0. Not only did the Jr Colonials dominate on the scoreboard, they allowed only one shot in the period, with Newtown defender Brian Gregory showing no mercy on the opponents, throwing hard body checks and clearing away any chance for IceDogs shots. Early in the second period, Haklits scored again, this time assisted by Savoia and another Newtown forward, Justin Corsello. The IceDogs' goaltender Austin Beaupre stopped the next 12 Western CT shots to hold the score at 5-1 after two periods. In the third period, Sandercox scored the most impressive goal of the weekend, gathering the puck inside of his own blue line, skating with authority through numerous IceDogs players and roofing a hard shot over Beaupre for an unassisted tally. Harrison and Liam Smith then assisted on a hat-trick goal by Haklits. Newtown goalie Patrick McLoughlin had a relatively easy weekend in notching two more victories and lowering his goals-against average in a very impressive season.
The Jr Colonials raised their Connecticut Hockey Conference record to 11-4-1.
Next up for the Jr Colonials are CHC matchups against West Hartford at the Danbury Ice Arena on Saturday and then an important game against the ECHO Stars at the Bolton Ice Palace on Sunday.
Colonials Continue Winning Ways
12/23/2008
The Jr Colonials Pee Wee A hockey team stayed unbeaten for a six-game stretch after a 1-1 tie against the Darien Blue Wave at the Stamford Twin Rinks on December 13 and a 5-1 win against the Greater New Haven Warriors at the Northford Ice Pavilion on December 14. The Colonials lost 3-1 to the ECHO Stars this past Saturday but rebounded to defeat the Northeastern Connecticut IceDogs 4-2 on Sunday. Here is a recap of the recent games:
Colonials 1, Darien 1: Trailing 1-0, the Jr Colonials responded when Newtown Middle School student Owen Sandercox rifled a shot from the left point to even the score in the second period. NMS student Patrick McLoughlin played a solid game in goal and preserved the tie with a spectacular save late in the third period when he got his right pad on a hard shot.
Colonials 5, Warriors 1: The Jr Colonials shook off the long car ride up to Northford outshot the Warriors 45-15 in the win. Forward Frank Haklits tallied two unassisted goals, one on a crisp wrist shot and another on a breakaway, which he buried with a quick backhanded shot. Forward Cooper McLean of Newtown gathered a pass by Haklits and lifted a quick, hard shot into the top of the net to make it 3-0. Sandercox had the secondary assist. Seventh-grader Justin Corsello then closed out the Jr. Colonials' scoring with two goals in the third period, the first on a goal set up by Haklits. Corsello then completed the Jr Colonials' scoring by making some nice fakes around the Warriors defense and wristing a high, hard shot home. The Jr Colonials improved to 9-3-1.
ECHO Stars 3, Colonials 1: At Danbury Ice Arena, the Colonials struck first against their CHC rival when Haklits found the net in the first period. Then, a controversial goal by the Stars changed the complexion of the game. Jr. Colonials goalie Patrick McLoughlin seemed to have the puck covered in the crease, but the whistle did not blow the play dead. Instead, ECHO continued to push and poke for the puck, creating a pileup that eventually saw the puck enter the goal for a 1-1 tie. The Jr. Colonials never recovered and fell behind.
Colonials 4, IceDogs 2: The Colonials made a long, snowy trek up to UCONN's Freitas Ice Forum in Storrs to face off against the Northeastern CT IceDogs. Facing an IceDogs team that was just 4-11 in the CHC, the Jr. Colonials were sluggish. Steven Almeida scored a first-period goal on a wrist shot from the high slot and the IceDogs answered with one of their own. Almeida then scored another goal on a nice shot that he banked in off of an opposing player's stick from behind the IceDogs' net. However, the Jr. Colonials allowed the opposition to tie the game at 2-2. The Jr. Colonials were finally able to open up a lead and put away the IceDogs in the third period on goals by NMS students Dan Harrison and Heydan Savoia.
The Colonials, improved to 10-4-1 in CHC action. Up next for the Colonials is a Saturday game against the Northwestern CT IceHawks before a rematch with the IceDogs on Sunday.
Jr. Colonials Skate To Victory And Dramatic Tie
12/11/2008
excerpted from the NEWTOWN BEE www.newtownbee.com
The Western CT Jr. Colonials Pee Wee A team, the Jr. Colonials, in a Connecticut Hockey Conference match this past Saturday, faced off against an undefeated Simsbury youth hockey team at the Danbury Ice Arena, and handed Simsbury its first loss of the season by a score of 5-2.
Playing this contest on their home ice, the Jr. Colonials came out strong and dominated the early part of the game, out-skating the Simsbury team, applying constant offensive pressure and employing a neutral zone defensive scheme that helped stifle Simsbury's offensive parries up the ice.
The Jr. Colonials took the lead on a goal by Tyler Trombetta which was set up by Frank Haklits. Forward Dan Harrison swooped behind the Simsbury net and banked in a tricky shot off of the back of the Simsbury goalie for a 2-0 lead.
After Simsbury cut the lead to 2-1, defenseman Kevin Keiser took a pass from Steven Almeida and deposited a smooth writ shot from the point off of the crossbar for a 3-1 advantage. Simsbury got back to within a goal before the Colonials answered. Defenseman Owen Sandercox capped a beautiful rush up the right side of the ice with a crisp pass to forward Matt Hooker who scored to restore the two-goal lead.
Jr. Colonials goaltender Patrick McLoughlin protected the lead and Sandercox scored on top-shelf wrister from the top of the left circle. The 5-2 win raised the Jr. Colonials' CHC Tier 3 record to 8-3 and dropped Simsbury to 10-1.
On Sunday, the Jr. Colonials fought back to earn a 4-4 tie against a tough Tier 2 Avon-Canton-Farmington Panthers team at the Avon Old Farms Rink in Avon. The Panthers had a significant team-size advantage over the Jr. Colonials and attempted to physically intimidate the Jr. Colonials in the early going and were penalized for slashing, boarding and hitting from behind. The Jr. Colonials refused to back down from the onslaught, throwing numerous, hard checks of their own. Down 2-0, Hayden Savoia scored on a high shot to slice the deficit to a goal. Haklits and Harrison assisted on the play. The Panthers led 3-1 heading into the third but the Jr. Colonials clawed their way back into the game when Haklits found Harrison on the left wing for a goal on a wrist shot. Savoia got his second goal of the game, this one from in close, assisted by Steven Almeida and Sandercox, to tie the game. The Jr. Colonials continued to attack throughout the remainder of the game and trailing 4-3, head coach Pete McLean pulled his goaltender to add an extra attacker. The Jr. Colonials buzzed around the perimeter of the offensive zone, making quick passes and looking for a clear shot. The puck was then passed out to the point from hard work by Almeida and Savoia, and Sandercox finished off the play by finding the upper right corner of the net with a mere 11 seconds left to tie the game at 4-4.
All four Jr. Colonials goals in the game were scored by Newtown skaters.
After the contest was over, coach McLean commented, "There are bad ties and there are good ties. This was definitely a good tie." The Jr. Colonials hope to keep their momentum going this weekend with away games against Darien and Greater New Haven.
